New Construction Chain Link Fence

Whether you’ve been in business 5 minutes or 50 years, you can always find new ways to improve your workflow which means a smoother-running job and potentially reduced costs.  While there are steps you can take mid-project to find new efficiencies, in this post we’re going to look at more of the back-office elements that have the greatest impact on your bottom line.

Pick The Right Tools.

We’re not referring to circular saws and 16-penny nailers, but rather organization and communication tools that can help you stay on track even off the job site.  If your a home remodeler, something as robust as Procore or SiteMax may be both too costly and too cumbersome to work with, but a lightweight tool like Smartsheet or Teamwork might fit the bill.  It all depends on your business and project scale.

Schedule Up Front.

With the appropriate project management software you can spend a bit of time up front setting schedules, budgets, and notifications for yourself and others to ensure everyone’s on track.  If something shifts in the schedule, simply adjust and those down the chain will be alerted to the schedule adjustment.  I’m sure at this point you’re thinking, “my subs don’t use a computer for anything but invoicing!”  You may be right, but what if that reminder can come as a text message to their phone, or an email—or both?  You’d be assured your granite installer would know what day they’re coming to measure and install.

Communication is Key.

At velocity, some GC’s maintain several subcontractors at the construction site at one time, so making and receiving calls from 3rd parties can be challenging—even if it’s the customer!  By setting up a clear communication mechanism, whether it’s the project management tool or a separate system or service, you can be sure that everyone is being fed information in a timely fashion.
